Hi everyone! My name is Stacey Van Wart and I am Clinical Social Worker, newest team member at Rehab1, and incredible excited to be offering private counselling services here in Moncton. Helping individuals become the best version of themselves is the GREATEST job in the world. Everyday I get the opportunity to reveal people’s inner super hero powers and showing them how it can be used to conquer the stresses the are facing. It is possible through Walk and Talk Therapy.
Walk and Talk therapy is all about engaging in any light physical activity while having a Solution Focused conversation. Exercising allows the body to process the stress we are experiencing meanwhile talking allows our mind to process the thoughts and feeling we are facing. It is also an opportunity to reconnect with nature which possess its own intrinsic therapeutic qualities such as increased sense of wellbeing, improve mental function and companionship (Natynczuk,nd). It allows for three therapies to occur at once.
Solution Focus Brief Therapy is an approach of psychotherapy which is based on building solutions then problem solving. It explores individual’s skills, abilities and attributes instead of the present problems and past causes (Iveson, 2002). By having conversations that focus on your desired future reveals how your strengths and resources are used to make that future a reality (Froerer & Connie, 2016).
Walk and Talk therapy is an effective way to decrease stress, anxiety, depression, postpartum mood disorders while increasing self esteem and coping skills. This will lead to the individual feeling better equipped to deal with life stress. It also has helped people struggling with substance use and abuse, prenatal and perinatal loss. Walk and Talk therapy is not the only effective approach to managing our mental health but it is a major part of preventing reoccurrences.
